Area swimmers compete in state meet
Kiah Francis wins state title in 200 breaststroke
The 12 and under age group competed July 25-26 and the 13 and older group swam Aug. 1-2.
"All of our area athletes swam lifetime best times at these meets," Rhinelander Swim Club coach Lindsay Byrka noted. "That's impressive for two reasons. First, they only had five weeks to practice and train because of pool refurbishing in June and secondly, the meet was held at a 50-meter pool, which is more than twice the length of our training pool. Those factors made it a much different race than what they are used to."
The results were as follows:
12 and Unter
• Malia Francis (11) - 50 butterfly 40th; 100 butterfly 41st; 50 freestyle 62nd.
• Charlie Heck (10) - 50 backstroke 48th; 50 breaststroke 26th; 50 freestyle 39th.
• Joseph Heck (12) - 50 backstroke 18th; 100 backstroke 23rd; 50 freestyle 24th; 50 breaststroke 12th; 100 breaststroke 25th.
• Kristin Schaars (12) - 50 butterfly 54th; 50 freestyle 47th; 100 freestyle 56th; 50 breaststroke 20th; 100 breaststroke 24th; 200 breaststroke 23rd; 200 freestyle relay 17th; 400 medley relay 18th; 200 medley relay 19th; 400 freestyle relay 22nd.
• Makenna Winnicki (12) - 50 butterfly 59th; 50 backstroke 65th; 100 backstroke 84th; 400 medley relay 18th; 200 medley relay 19th.
• Abi Winnicki (9) - 200 Medley Relay 16th; 200 Freestyle Relay 13th.
13& Over
• Kiah Francis (16) - 100 freestyle 5th; 100 breaststroke 2nd; 200 breaststroke 1st; 100 butterfly 6th; 200 individual medley (IM) 4th; 400 IM 6th.
• Nolan Francis (14) - 50 freestyle 14th; 100
freestyle 26th; 100 backstroke 20th.
Kiah Francis posted Junior National qualifying times in the 200 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke, and 200 IM. Junior Nationals will take place in December.
The Francis family lives and trains in Rhinelander and are members of the TIDE swim club from Wausau. Kristin Schaars lives in Eagle River and is a member of the Lakeland swim club.
