Rain in the area cleared shortly before play began on Monday. Jeff Smith, the Snowhawks playing manager, said he thought the damp field was actually a positive.
"The field is nice," he said. "It's fast. You can run fast. It's good. It feels perfect."
Neither team scored in the first two innings of play but it wasn't long before the bats came to life.
The Snowhawks scored three runs in the third inning when Craig Holmquist, Alex Bailey and Billy Kuckkahn all came around to score.
Zimmy's answered back with a bang, scoring five runs in the fourth inning before having the side called on the five-run rule.
The Snowhawks put three more runs on the board during the bottom half of the fourth inning, making it a 6-5 ball game.
In the sixth inning Zimmy's put four more runs on the board, but no one was prepared for Alex Bailey in the bottom half of the inning.
The Snowhawks had two runs in and two runners on base when Bailey came to bat. Bailey sent the first pitch flying over the right field wall for a three-run home run.
Smith was proud of his teammate.
"He had a nice shot over (the fence) in right field," Smith said.
After Bailey scored the side was retired on the five-run rule.
The Snowhawks put six more runs on the board in the final three innings and shut out Zimmy's the rest of the way to win the game 17-9.
Smith said at first his team struggled to get the bats going, but he knew they would come around and the team would be successful.
"They (Zimmy's) put a lot of ball players on base," he said. "We just happened to get out of a lot of situations and we were a little bit slow getting the bats going, but I was confident that if we just keep swinging we were going to do it and that's what it was."
Overall, Smith thought the Snowhawks played well, but said it could have been a closer game with just a few more hits by Zimmy's.
"It was a good game," he said. "We expected it and if they would have gotten a couple timely hits we could have been close."
With just four games left this season the Snowhawks will take on local firefighters next Monday at Snowshoe park.
Smith said the firefighters plan to practice this week to get used to running on snowshoes and prepare for Monday night's showdown with the Snowhawks.
"There will probably be some new players. They're going to practice a couple times this week now," he said. "(It will be) firefighters from Lake Tomahawk, probably some of the Woodruff and Arbor Vitae guys. I'm not sure who they'll all have. I hear it's about 20 on the squad so it will be a good showing."
The game starts at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Be sure to show up early to get a seat.
