RN: Explain your job
Modic: As NATH executive director I am responsible for the running of the non-profit, along with our board of directors. So I am a member of all of the subcommittees - a non-voting member - but I do go to a majority of the sub-committee meetings. I'm responsible for putting together a budget so that the finance committee and full board can approve it as well as then making sure that we are staying within our budgets. I am a member of the community outreach and fundraising committee so each event we do I have different tasks. As the computer person in our group I might be putting together a poster, I might be putting spreadsheets together so that everyone knows where different things go, we utilize a program called "Sign Up Genius" for our volunteers. I'm the one who upkeeps that website, so a variety of different tasks. I oversee the staff and the running of Frederick Place.
RN: How long have you held this job?
Modic: I started in October of 2010, so just prior to the house opening. So they had already purchased the house and started the renovations when I came on board.
RN: What is your favorite part of the job?
Modic: I think all of the people I have met. Having been in Rhinelander for 18 plus years prior to taking on this position I believed I knew a lot of people. I have met twice as many.
RN: What is the biggest misconception about the job?
Modic: The biggest thing that we have had to work on misconception-wise is who is a homeless person, clearing the stereotype of what does a homeless person look like. I think we certainly have a ways to go, but we've definitely come far. The typical belief is that disheveled person who is living under the bridge or carrying around shopping bags or black bags or whatever and having to prove that. I don't think we have to prove it so much anymore, but in the beginning it was "Do you really need a homeless shelter?" I think that and having just shy of 400 individuals call this place home, never being empty, averaging 10 to 12 people every single night has proven that. I think the other struggle I have is I think we believe everybody knows about us.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Modic: Photography has become a new hobby of mine and I am a full-time soccer mom. I have a son who plays year-round so I attend every soccer game and practice that I can.
