At this point in the year, students are required to do research and write an argumentative essay, which they did about an individual whose qualities would answer the Essential Question of "What does it take to be a Hero?"
To define that concept, students explored the many different individuals or organizations which might fit the term "hero": Perhaps it was someone whom they admire, someone who deserves to be emulated, or perhaps someone whose footsteps should be followed.
Students then created their own definitions of a hero. From there, they researched individuals such as Jackie Robinson, Anne Frank, Robin Williams, James Naismith, Shakira, Walt Disney, a student's own relative, Malala Yousafzai, Winter the Dolphin, and many others. They wrote essays and made a slide as a part of a presentation highlighting each hero and the matching heroic trait. This slide presentation was shown to JWMS students, staff, and parents during a homeroom celebration. The top three essays had been previously videotaped and then shown to the audience.
Six of the students being recognized received a medal with the Lamp of Knowledge icon engraved with 2015 Hero Essay Contest Award of Excellence. The top three received trophies for their hard work and well-crafted essays.
