On April 12, when high winds moved through the Eagle River area, the Northland Pines Community Garden hoop house sustained extensive damage. The winds tore off and shredded the plastic covering.

"The timing couldn't have been worse as we were preparing to seed the hoop house for an early crop of greens," said Jasmyn Schmidt, Northland Pines Farm to School AmeriCorps Nutrition Educator.

The hoop house has been used by the Northland Pines Farm to School program for the past two years for garden-based education and to provide produce for classroom nutrition lessons, for the school lunch program, and, during the summer, for the Vilas Food Pantry. The hoop house extends the season in spring and fall, allowing for more opportunities in our short growing season.

Northland Pines Community Garden and Northland Pines Farm to School are asking for donations from the community to help to cover the $900 cost of the new covering system. They plan to get the repairs done as quickly as possible so spring planting can occur.

River Valley Bank has donated $200 to help cover the cost. Donations in any amount are appreciated and may be sent to Northland Pines Farm to School, 1800 Pleasure Island Road, Eagle River WI 54521, and be made payable to Northland Pines Community Garden.
