Children played and their parents gathered valuable information about healthy lifestyle choices Saturday during the YMCA of the Northwoods Healthy Kids Day event.

"It's really fun, there's a lot for the kids to learn about and there's a lot of activities to keep them interested," said Jenny Tuckey, who was enjoying the event with her family for the second time.

Tuckey liked the variety of booths and that the activities got the children moving.

Some of the booths children and their parents could visit included TLC dog training, the Rhinelander District Library and EverGood Farm.

"The turnout is awesome," said Diane Zarembka, director of the YMCA's children's learning center. "I think they're all having a fun time, I see a lot of smiles on their faces and I think it's just a great event for families to come and run around and have fun together."

"(Healthy Kids Day is) pretty cool and for little kids I think they really want it to be every day," added Chandler Servent, 7.

Servent especially enjoyed the bounce house.

Janice Bureta and her two children, ages 7 and 4, have attended Healthy Kids Day for several years.

"They see the posters in the hallway and we mark it on the calendar and they come down," Bureta said.

McKayla Style manned the Camp Manitowish YMCA booth. This is the second year the booth was a part of the event, but this was Style's first year participating.

Camp Manitowish is a wilderness camp. Those attending the summer camp are between the ages of 10-14. The outpost program is for participants 14-18 years old.

Style was distributing information about the Family Camp, which is held Aug. 16-21.

"We have kids and adults of all ages - we have babies to grandparents there - they all stay in a cabin together, they eat family style," she said.

They have activities like biking, crafts, horseback riding and more.

"I love (Healthy Kids Day), it's a great way to get the local community active in such great opportunities available in their backyard," Style said.

Healthy Kids Day is a nationwide event that shows parents ways to keep their children fit physically and mentally, as well as eating healthier and drinking more water.
