Eager job hunters, clutching resumes in one hand and adjusting ties with the other, descended on the Quality Inn in Rhinelander Wednesday for the annual Northern Advantage Job Fair.

The job fair helps pair prospective employees with area businesses looking to hire.

Sarah Kennedy, WIA case manager for Forward Service Corporation, said the event draws employers from all over the Northwoods and is a great way to discover new opportunities.

"We're having a community job fair with employers from a lot of areas," she said. "There are people from Wausau, Rhinelander and some from the Langlade County area. They're getting together with the workforce development board job center for employment options for people in our community."

The job fair is a great way to get your name out there, but Kennedy said there's a lot of prep work that can be done before the event that helps make candidates stand out. Luckily, all that prep work can be done with the help of local job coaches.

"People looking for a job should definitely come down to the Northern Advantage Job Center," she said. "That's a great start. We have tons of programs and free services to help people prepare for interviews, resume preparations and any other kinds of skills they want to gain to help them search for employment."

Turnout for the event was on par with last year and met the expectations of the organizers. Erika Warning, a career coach at Nicolet College, said she saw quite a few people filter through the doors over the course of the day.

"We're at about 130 people right now," she said. "Last year, we had a couple hundred, so it's been pretty similar."

While the chief goal for those who attended to the job fair was to find potential employment, Warning said there were plenty of bonus perks, as well. Even if people didn't find their perfect job at the event, they still introduced themselves to potential employers, which could pay dividends down the road.

"It's a great event for multiple reasons," she said. "You can access job employment, you can connect with employers, but it's also a great networking opportunity. Even if you're not job seeking or employers aren't hiring for the exact positions you want, you're still able to network and build great connections with employers hiring in our area."
