Jeremy Irish, a local Wildlife Specialist with the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Wildlife Services (WS), has been awarded the Eastern Region Wildlife Specialist of the Year Award for 2014.

"Originally from Amberg, Irish was hired by WS in 1994 as a seasonal wildlife specialist to assist in the organization's beaver damage management program," according to WS press release. "As a skilled trapper, Irish brought his strong technical skills and commitment to quality service to WS, and was quickly recognized as an asset to the program. Irish is passionate about carrying out WS' mission of resolving conflicts between humans and wildlife."

"I really enjoy serving in such an essential role with Wildlife Services," said Irish. "This is especially true when I am working closely with people and wildlife, while assisting the public in maintaining safety and in many cases, their livelihoods."

After spending 10 years voluntarily relocating to various locations throughout Wisconsin, Irish relocated to the Rhinelander area in 2004 when he was selected for a permanent position with WS carrying out the administration of the Wildlife Damage Abatement and Claims Program (WDACP). The WDACP is a program which assists farmers in five counties by providing damage prevention assistance and partial compensation when wildlife damages their crops.

Throughout the duration of his career with WS, Irish has actively promoted the program's overarching goal of providing professional wildlife damage management. He has successfully accomplished this through interaction and cooperation with cooperators, peers, and the public, according to the release. Robert Willging, a district supervisor for WS in Wisconsin, praised Irish's professionalism and ability to communicate with the public.

"Jeremy excels in understanding the importance of professionalism and communication when working with diverse groups of cooperators to achieve WS goals and objectives," said Willging. "He takes great pride in the work he does, which results in a great deal of confidence from cooperators and the public."

Irish frequently volunteers his time engaging in outreach efforts with local entities including presenting the WS program to university students, in an effort to give back to students who are interested in learning more about the program and its mission and initiatives.

Irish is one of nearly 200 wildlife specialists in the WS Eastern Region, which covers Maine to Minnesota and Louisiana to Puerto Rico.

He lives in the Gleason area with his wife of 16 years, Laura, and their seven children.
