Rhinelander's first stoplight, seen here in a photo from around 1933, stood in the center of the intersection of Brown and Davenport streets and was the city's only stoplight until 1937. The signal stood firmly on its concrete post until the summer of 1938, when it was struck by a salesman from Wausau. The salesman saved the city the work of digging out the post, since plans had already been made to replace the stoplight with two corner lights similar to those already in place at the Stevens-Davenport intersection. Earlier in 1938, signals were also placed at the intersection of Pelham and Anderson.
