Local students participate in Helen Mears Art Contest
By Kayla Thomason-
This contest is being held in many communities throughout Wisconsin. The winners will go to the district competition Aug. 18 in Wausau. The winners of that contest will go to state in Elkhart Lake.
"We did really well last year where we had a state winner here in Rhinelander, so we're excited for this," said Sue Bessert, president of the General Federation of Women's Clubs - Rhinelander Woman's Club.
The schools' art teachers and the students' parents were in attendance for the award ceremony.
"We're very happy with the turnout of parents and community people that are here and I'm very thankful to the two art teachers too," said Cindy Goll, secretary of the Rhinelander Woman's Club and co-chair of the competition."I thought for this age group that they were quite well done. We do have aspiring artists here in Rhinelander."
Abigail Krueger of Nativity took third place with her piece "Bless This House."
It was originally an art assignment of a white cutout house with pink background.
Krueger found the contest encouraging.
"It's neat because then - like I'm not a very good artist - but it was really cool that I won," she said. Taylor Mehling of Nativity received an honorable mention for her piece "Smaug," which was also an art assignment.
"I really like dragons so I chose the dragon picture and I started drawing and there you go, a dragon," Mehling said. She competed in last year's contest but didn't place.
Helen Mears was an artist from the Oshkosh area and in 1927, a number of years after she passed away, the Woman's Club decided to honor her.
"It was started because Helen Mears was very active in the art world," said Adrienne Birkholz, co-chair of the event and former president of the club. "(She) was commissioned to do Wisconsin's sculpture for the World's Fair at the turn of that century. In those days it was quite spectacular, I would think, to have a woman sculptor doing these (large) things."
The James Williams Middle School students who participated in the 2015 Helen Farnsworth Mears Art Contest are Emily Brod ("Broken Heart"), Madison Carpenter ("Northwoods Cabin"), Connor Lund, ("Lucas Oil Stadium"), Ella Mullikin, ("Hallucinogenics"), Raven Sturtevant ("Iris" and "Raven"), Olivia Turgeon ("Flowers"), Nikki Jensen ("Vase"), Bridget Rich ("Beauty"), and Emma Wendt ("Melting Vase").
The Nativity of Our Lord students who participated in the contest are Tori Hahner, ("Cardinals"), Grace Heck, ("Sundae"), Carmen Ibarra ("Notan"), Abigail Krueger, ("Bless This Home"), Maile Llanos ("Volcano"), Taylor Mehling ("Smaug"), Michelle Pazdernik ("Three Sodas"), Maddie Quinn ("Vase/Face"), Emma Roberts ("Vase/Face 2") Jeb Skubal ("Red Forest") and Jenna Younker ("Evening Woods").
