Children participated in several spring-related activities Wednesday during the Rhinelander District Library's Spring Fling Celebration.

Forty to 50 children started the festivities with a story and dancing.

"They love it, they have a really good time," said associate librarian Denise Chojnacki. "One year it was warm enough to do it outside. This year we just weren't sure because they were predicting rain."

What's a Spring Fling without balloons? The children were elated as they hit pastel-colored bits of air-filled rubber into the air and tried to get them over the volleyball net.

As that particular activity drew to a close the room was filled with the sound of dozens of balloons being popped.

"(The children are) having a lot of fun," said Kassi Hill, mother of Aiden, 7, and Jasmine, 5.

After balloon volleyball the children dispersed to several stations where they participated in crafts and games.

"We came yesterday for the 'Annie' movie and when they heard that we got to come back today they were excited," said Carrie Hacker, lead teacher at Old School Arts and Learning Center. She brought nine children, ages 7 to 10, from the Curran Building.

Youth in attendance created beaded clothespin butterflies. They colored the pins and strung the beads on pipe cleaners, bending the wires to form the wings.

Madyson Kramsvogel, a first-time attendee, enjoyed making the clothespin butterfly. She said she'd like to participate in next year's festivities.

It was also Madeleine Ewan's first time at the Spring Fling Celebration.

"It's pretty fun," Madeleine said.

Her butterfly's wings were a rainbow of colors.

"It's cool (that the library has this for us)," Madeleine said.

She would like to come again next year, she said.

"We look forward to coming every year when they do it or the other parties that support holidays," Hacker said.

Other activities included playing with hula hoops, competing in spring-themed tic-tac-toe, where children placed red or blue fake eggs into cups, and bunny bowling.

In bunny bowling, children rolled eggs at a white box with bunny ears, painted eyes and a hole for a mouth.

Aiden Hill liked the bunny bowling and making butterflies. His was black, red and pink.

"I really like (the activities," he said.

The event wasn't only for the children, the adults liked it too.

"I think it's awesome, it really is," Hill said. "It gives the kids something to do in this small town, especially during spring break."

She would like to bring her children again next year.

Melissa Gauthier's daughter, Trinity, 6, looked like she was enjoying her first Spring Fling Celebration.

"She's liking it," Gauthier said. "When she was little we came to the baby ones."

Gauthier likes the library's activities.

"Thank you to the library, they put on a good show and always enjoy doing it. You can tell by their faces and the kids' (faces)," she said.
