The event includes the film "Vicious Cycles," produced by Susan Reetz of Wausau; a discussion of Nic Scheff's book "Tweak," which is the story of the author's personal struggle with drugs and alcohol; and a panel discussion.
Panel members include Kari Decorah, director of Options Counseling Services; Reetz; and Kyle Parish, a Rhinelander police task force investigator.
"The reason methamphetamine is important to the (Rhinelander) community is the ease of manufacturing methamphetamine," Parish said.
"Most people who start consuming methamphetamine start out abusing amphetamine-type prescription medication. When the medication becomes too expensive or is no longer available, people turn to methamphetamine. The effects of any drug abuse tend to also lead to theft which has a major impact on the community as well."
Reetz's short documentary film incorporates interviews with former addicts, a family member, law enforcement, public health officials, a Department of Natural Resources warden and a treatment professional to explore the physical, psychological, relational, societal and criminal impact of methamphetamine use. Sheff relates his personal struggle with drugs and alcohol in "Tweak," a book described by the Chicago Tribune as "difficult to read and impossible to put down."
The public is welcome to attend at no charge. Those attending are encouraged to read Sheff's book and to participate in the discussion. Rhinelander ArtStart is located at 68 S. Stevens St. in Rhinelander. Further information is available at the ArtStart website, www.ArtStartRhinelander.org.
