A Rhinelander woman and her fiance have asked their wedding guests to make a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in lieu of wedding gifts.

The bride, Chelsea Pederson, was browsing St. Jude's website when she came across a post that said "Weddings for St. Jude."

She loved the idea and mentioned it to her fiance, Michael Fifield, who shared her excitement.

"It was a very easy decision to have our wedding guests make donations to St. Jude instead of receiving items," she said. "My fiance and I would rather have children and their families have the feeling of hope than for us to receive an item for ourselves."

Pederson said their families have been very supportive.

"Everyone has been supportive of our decision to have them donate to a good cause," she said. "I've gotten comments such as, 'Your family is amazing' or 'Bless your hearts, you're making a huge difference.'"

Pederson has been an avid supporter of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital since grade school.

While attending Northwood's Community Secondary School she raised a couple hundred dollars, wrote letters and made cards for the cancer patients at the hospital.

"Raising money (for) St. Jude Children's Research Hospital means everything to me," she said. "They have amazing people trying to find cures for these children that deserve to live life like children should."

The couple's link on St. Jude's website has been available to their guests for just over a week. Their goal is to raise $1,000 and so far the experience has been amazing, Pederson said.

She and Fifield are hoping to visit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital during their honeymoon.

"There's not a time the commercial comes on the TV that I don't have a tear in my eye wishing there was something huge I could do to help them," she said. "Now, I have found one way to. I'm making my special day theirs as well."

The couple plans to wed on July 11.
