Rhinelander man charged in string of restaurant burglaries
According to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday, Benjamin H. Marquardt is accused of burglarizing the Sportsman's Cafe, Sunset Junction, Arby's and Burger King in Rhinelander last March. A total of 10 felony and eight misdemeanor charges have been filed against Marquardt. Each charge carries a repeater enhancer.
Investigators began to suspect Marquardt after the March 17 break-ins at the Sportsman's Cafe, Burger King and Arby's and spent most of the summer piecing together enough evidence to charge him, according to a police report attached to the criminal complaint.
In all but one of the break-ins, Marquardt used knowledge of the surveillance systems in the restaurants and was able to remove recordings of his actions, according to the report. In addition to the burglary charges, Marquardt has also been charged with criminal damage to property over $2,500 and theft of movable property over $2,500 in connection with two of the break-ins.
Marquardt is currently serving a three-year prison term imposed after his probation on a previous burglary charge was revoked. If convicted of the new charges, he could spend the rest of his life in prison.
He will make his initial appearance in Oneida County Circuit Court Oct. 6.
