Moscow Nights to bring authentic Russian folk music to Nicolet College Oct. 3
Each musician in this versatile trio grew up in Russia, going to great lengths to preserve a part of their musical heritage that was nearly lost forever, said Jim Nuttall, Nicolet College Theatre director.
"What's impressive is that they are not only great musicians and performers but also historically accurate to the Russian folk tradition," Nuttall said. "When you see these guys you can tell that they are having a blast on stage singing and dancing. They've put an incredible amount of work into researching all aspects of Russian folk music and the result is a very energetic, often humorous, and always engaging performance."
Tickets are $12 and can be purchased online at nicoletlive.com or by calling (715) 365-4646.
The group formed 16 years ago, performing first in Russia and then expanding to Western Europe before coming to the United States, settling in Raleigh, North Carolina.
With an air of spontaneity, these world-recognized musicians perform dressed in traditional Russian attire, complete with Cossack hats, and armed with balalaikas, which are triangular-shaped, three-string guitars that are often huge and nearly the size of a person.
All three are classically trained musicians. They've produced numerous albums over the years and have won multiple awards for their musical art in both Russia and the United States.
