Wooden sidewalks were still in use when the armory was constructed in 1900 to house Company L, a Wisconsin militia unit formed in 1898 at the beginning of the Spanish-American War. The majority of the company were residents of Oneida County. Located on the east side of Stevens Street where the Claridge parking lot is today, the armory's large auditorium was used not only as a drill floor by the military unit, but as a dance floor and social gathering place for the community. The building was destroyed by fire in 1929 and replaced with the Memorial Building.
