Three Lakes Women's Club fashion show helps fund scholarships
By Kayla Thomason-
Members of the women's club were served a delicious meal and then the models took to the runway.
Girls from Three Lakes High School acted as escorts.
The fashion show featured clothing from 11 stores modeled by 14 women of various ages.
Monica Donahoe, a first-time attendee, thought the food was wonderful and the outfits intriguing.
"I got a lot of nice ideas and wrote some notes and everything, I think they are doing a wonderful job," Donahoe said. She plans to attend next year.
The outfits were a hit with other women in the crowd as well.
"I really like [the outfits], it gives me some new places to go shopping," said Joyce Friedle, another first-time attendee.
Sue Sawicki, a perspective club member, liked most of the outfits and how they fit the models. She will attend next year.
"I think that all these women are very, very pleasant and I would like to get to know them," she said.
Brigette Schmidt, winner of one of three $1,000 scholarships the club awards students, modeled a gorgeous ballgown wedding dress. Her father escorted her to the runway.
Schmidt will be attending Nicolet College and hopes to earn a degree in business management. She intends to eventually transfer to Kendall College in Chicago for baking and pastry.
"I think that it's nice to have as many people as we have here, it's a big turnout," said Jean Dick, who has attended the fashion show since the '70s. "I'm glad that we have that because it's very encouraging to know that people want to come and support this."
Of the $25 ticket price, $10 goes to the scholarships. Since 1981, over $67,000 has been raised for the scholarships. This year's winners will be announced in May.
Collette Sorgel, first vice president of the club, has been a member for eight years. She said this was the biggest crowd she has seen yet.
"It's a fun group and if you're in the Northwoods, no matter where you are, join (us)," she said. "Come, we have fun."
Members don't need to be from Three Lakes and can be seasonal residents. Dues are $15 for a year, according to Rosie Obukowicz, president of the Three Lakes Women's Club.
Meetings are usually held the third Wednesday of the month at the Reiter Center.
