Seen here in a postcard mailed in 1908, the majority of the buildings on Brown Street were wood frame, clapboard structures. Earlier in the year, William Lord came from Crandon to take over the saloon on the west corner (today's House of Spirits), naming it "The Eagle Sample Room." On the corner across the street, Hans Anderson conducted his grocery store and meat market. Fire destroyed several of his neighbors later that year. The roads during this era were not dirt, but macadam, small stones and crushed granite layered to provide drainage, yet allow the small wheels of wagons to roll along smoothly. This view looks south from the corner of Rives and Brown streets.
