About 20 runners and walkers came out Saturday to participate in the first-ever Hodag Painted Run sponsored by the Pelican Fire Department.

The 5K began like any other running event you'll find around the country, with participants weaving through town getting their exercise for the day while supporting a good cause. However this run included little surprises for the participants. There were five stations set up with volunteers ready to cover every runner with colored powder as they ran by.

After noticing that color runs are becoming more popular across the country, Anita Brooks, event coordinator and EMS operations manager for the department, said her crew wanted to get in on the fun.

"I heard about the color runs and I thought it would be really run to bring to the Northwoods and turn it into a really nice fundraiser for us," she said.

"I took it to the department and we voted on it and decided it would be a great idea so we put a committee together and it took off from there."

For every volunteer fire department in the area, fundraising is a lifeline that keeps the firefighters equipped, supplies stocked and trucks running. It's no different in Pelican.

"We wanted to do something fresh, something fun. We all have to work to raise funds, but we wanted to do something different to make it fun," Brooks said.

"It pays for equipment, training, we have a reading program that we do with Pelican Elementary School so we can use it to buy some books to donate - we like to be as involved as we can with the school."

"Trainings cost a lot of money typically if they're not funded by some other program already, so we like to keep up to date on the new equipment that comes out, the new fire fighting ideas that are always coming out, all that stuff," she added.

While the turnout for the event wasn't as high as the crew had hoped for, a good time was had by all. Brooks said a lot of the credit for that goes to the volunteers and sponsors.

"We just want to thank everyone that made this possible," she said. "We couldn't have done it without our volunteers and our sponsors."
