Organizers say first Grandparents Day Walk a success
By Kayla Thomason-
Grandparents enjoyed a leisurely stroll under a cloudless sky followed by a delicious lunch and a boat ride.
The event was hosted by Let's Go Fishing, a group that organizes boat rides for senior citizens.
Deanna Biesik and many of the other grandparents strolled from the boat landing along the shore to the baseball diamond.
"[There are] all nice friendly people here, nice lunch and everything," Biesik said.
Joe Baltus thought the walk was "super" and said he plans to attend next year.
He thought the walk was just long enough but he was really looking forward to the boat ride, as was Marly Johnson.
"I love the water and it's so beautiful here and this is a great opportunity to sit in the boat and look around at the cottages and the water and the birds so I'm quite excited," Johnson said. "So far [the event is] great and I'm impressed with all the volunteers and all the people who have donated to this picnic, it's really wonderful."
Some grandparents said they hope their grandchildren will walk with them next year.
"Well I suppose [my grandchildren will come]. I tell them about it they might," Biesik said. "I'll invite them next year."
The first annual event was planned as a way for Northwoods grandparents to have fun with their grandchildren.
"We're looking at doing something to honor our seniors annually, get seniors out of the house, get them moving, get them walking, get them exercise, get them fresh air and then tying in their families in it as well," said Chrissy Peterson of Let's Go Fishing. "[Let's Go Fishing] is such a great organization to have (as there is) not much for seniors to do in our area."
Organizers are considering moving the Grandparents Day Walk to the summer so as not to compete with other walks and runs in September.
"We decided to have it on Grandparent's Day to honor our grandparents and our seniors here in the Northwoods," Peterson said. "With our busy lives we don't have a lot of time to reach out to our grandparents and I think this is a good day to [do that]."
Sponsors of the event were Dunkin' Donuts, Golden Harvest, Holiday Acres and Trig's.
