The first day of school can be a hectic one for all involved. Parents have to get their kids to the bus stop on time, teachers and paraprofessionals have to have their first lessons ready and principals have to make sure all students get to their assigned classrooms. And then there's Superintendent Kelli Jacobi and her administrative team who are responsible for overseeing the entire operation.
According to Jacobi, this year's first day of classes went very smoothly.
"I think it was a really good day. There was a lot of excitement, just like any first day, but I think our teachers, our principals, everybody was very prepared," she said. "There wasn't a lot of drama at all. We had, as always, some little ones that this was kind of scary for them, their first day of school, but many of them had already met their teachers and been in their schools so that helped."
That preparation paid dividends as the doors opened for another school year, Jacobi said.
"I think it was a really good day. I think people were prepared to welcome the kids back to school. I think things went really well," Jacobi said.
"We wanted to be sure that we were as prepared as we could be."
That extended to transportation.
"I think everything went really well with our transportation," Jacobi said. "We had no major issues or anything like that, so that was good."
Once everyone was settled in at their new desks, Jacobi said it was time for the students to get to know each other through ice breakers and team-building activities, a staple of the first day of school.
"There were a lot of team-building activities going on today, especially at the high school and (Northwoods Community Secondary School). I know those went really well," she said. "I saw one of them taking place at the high school and I know (Director of Instruction Teri) Maney went to one of those activities taking place out at (the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom)."
Maney was the administrative team's school monitor Tuesday, visiting various district buildings to see how things were going as Jacobi hunkered down in her office handling phone calls.
"We split it this year. Mrs. Maney visited all the schools and I held down the fort, taking phone calls and dealing with small problems that might pop up," Jacobi said.
"I was also at the high school seeing what's going on there. We made sure somebody was here (in the administration wing) and somebody was out and about."
Much like trying to predict the outcome of a baseball game based on the first pitch, Jacobi said she's hoping a smooth first day will translate into a successful year for the district.
"I always want to believe the best. I think we're well prepared for the school year," she said. "We worked hard this summer to make sure everything's in place, so yes, I believe it will be a great school year."
