Postcard... from the past

Constructed on the site of today's fire department, Rhinelander's first two-story high school was built in 1889 and is seen here in a postcard mailed in 1906. When the new high school was opened in 1913 on the hill above what is now Sarocka Park, the old high school was used as both the junior high and grade school. Often known as "Old Central," the building began to see decline in use for students as it aged. By 1925, an addition for junior high students only had been added, and grade school students were moved to "New Central" when it was completed. In 1939, the entire second floor was used by the vocational school, which eventually evolved into Nicolet College. The original part of the structure was razed in 1959, but the additions and annexes to the old high school saw continual use for many years after.
