Ruby's Pantry going strong: customers lining up month after month

"It's going amazing," said Pastor Joseph Fehlen of Grace Foursquare Church. "It's pretty phenomenal we're getting over 300-350 shares each month."
"Each month we see new people from different parts of the Northwoods," added Chrissy Peterson, promotions coordinator for Ruby's Pantry in Rhinelander.
Ruby's Pantry, which opened at Grace Foursquare in February, is not based on income but those who register for distribution are asked to make a $20 donation to help cover travel costs.
"We don't ask about income, anything like that, everyone's welcome," Peterson said.
Clients visiting Ruby's Pantry fill out a little questionnaire at registration, take a number, pay the $20 donation and mingle in the church while they wait to collect their food. When it is their turn they go across the parking lot to the Family Life Center where, they slide their boxes along the table and choose their goods.
"We work really, really hard to make sure everyone has a share," Peterson said.
Pantry organizers may change up the flow a little so people won't need to stand outside in the winter.
They are always looking for volunteers to sort items, weigh food, break down boxes and contact local organizations who might want the surplus food.
"I'm really seeing a positive feedback from the community," Peterson said. "I'm seeing a positive feedback from all of our participants that come through the doors, all the volunteers work really hard month after month welcoming each and every individual, making them feel very welcomed."
Ruby's Pantry is open the third Tuesday of every month. Registration is at 4 p.m. and distribution is at 5 p.m. Some people do start lining up hours before the food is distributed.
