Women's health the focus of sixth annual Scrap-Out Cancer event
By Kayla Thomason-
Scrap-Out Cancer focuses on a different theme women's health topic each year. This year's theme was sleep hygiene.
"[Scrap-Out Cancer is] not specific for cancer survivors, it's just an evening so that women can come out, spread out with all their projects that they can work on but then also learn about tips and techniques on how to better take care of themselves," said Kimberly Hetland, radiation oncology manager at the James Beck Cancer Center in Rhinelander.
Denise Check of Rhinelander enjoyed the event.
"I love [Scrap-Out Cancer]," she said. "It gives me a chance to come and get organized for my scrapbooking and get some projects done." This was her second time participating in the event. She said she found the presentation to be interesting, as it touched a bit on sleep apnea which her husband has.
Check also liked the fact that there are new speeches each year. She said it keeps her up to date on what is happening in the health field and causes her to be more aware of how to better take care of her health.
"I would just encourage more people to come and get informed on not only cancer but other health issues and [Scrap-Out Cancer] gives them a chance to meet a whole bunch of new people," she said.
Elida Garnier came with a friend who is a cancer survivor. The women craft together a lot and enjoyed their evening.
"It's wonderful, we'll come again for sure," Garnier said.
She brought all of her supplies and started a project involving a summer fishing trip she took with her family.
There were several tables set up with information on various health topics.
Old School Arts and Learning Center had a table set up for a "Make and Take" project involving a flower stamp and ribbon.
"I think [Scrap-Out Cancer] is great," said Louise Perreault of Old School Arts and Learning Center. "Anything that we can do to promote good healthy habits for families and kids and their moms, we just want to be a part of that if we can."
