Volkswagens were introduced to the Rhinelander community by Clarence Gilley in 1964. Advertising sales and service, Karmen Ghias, squarebacks, hatchbacks, convertibles and station wagons (VW vans were known as station wagons at that time), Gilley's Import Motors was established on Stevens Street when it was still part of East Curran and only two lanes. Rhinelander Honda now occupies the site.
