The event, which is organized by the school's Parent Advisory Committee (PAC), is meant to not only give the kids a chance to run around and have a good time, but to support their school.
"The Fun Run is our annual fundraiser where kids go out and get pledges during non-school hours to support them in the Fun Run," said Amy Vanney, NCES PAC president. "All the money comes to the PAC and then we turn around and we pay for everything the district doesn't pay for. We like to think we're all the fun in the school."
The Fun Run pays for activities like field trips that the district is unable to afford.
"We pay for the field trips, Grandparents Day, Teacher Appreciation Week festivities, snacks for things like Christmas programs, things like that," Vanney said.
"We do a Spring Fling where we feed the whole school and put on a musical. (These are the) kinds of things that really add to the students' experience at NCES."
The PAC also reaches out to businesses in the area to be corporate sponsors for the run. The sponsorship money goes toward purchasing prizes for the kids.
"We use that money to pay for the awards for the kids," Vanney said. "Whoever raises $100 is put into a drawing for a Chromebook. Whoever raises $75 is going to get a pass to the Northwoods Children's Museum - and they've donated quite a few of those. Whoever raises $50 gets a pizza party on awards day. Whoever raises $25 gets a winter NCES hat, and whoever just participates - meaning they show up to run or even just cheer their classmates on if they don't feel like running - they get a water bottle."
While pledges from the public have gone down in recent years, Vanney said she believes that is a result of the economy and not a lack of support for the school. She said the support the PAC has received over the years has been overwhelming.
"It feels fabulous. It's really, really good. The community has always stepped forward to support these kids and the things we're trying to provide for them," she said.
"I think that the more people we can get out here, and the more people we can get participating, we can give this school that community feel that it used to have when it was the Cassian-Woodboro School, which is great. It's awesome to see all the parents that come to support the kids and to see everyone volunteer when we do things like this. It's really encouraging and exciting."
