An annual event for the art community in the Northwoods, the Zombie Prom encourages people to have some fun while supporting local artists.
"We run a number of events for a number of things. We have our spring event, which is Bling and is our major fundraiser with a fashion show and raffles and things like that, but things like the Zombie Prom are very much about us being a part of the community," said Debra Ehmann, vice president of ArtStart.
"We like to be known as the party place, so this is an opportunity for people to come and have fun and enjoy themselves and see the building and what we're about. Really, it's all about having fun."
Events like the Zombie Prom also help ArtStart raise much-needed funds. As it is still very much in its infancy, ArtStart relies heavily on donations and community support to survive.
"We try to give back to the community as much as we can by holding things like the Sustainability Fair and children's art programs and things like that, and we couldn't do any of that without the wonderful support of the community," Ehmann said.
"One of the things that's so important to us to be able to be a part of developing downtown Rhinelander and making sure Rhinelander has a place to go to enjoy all kinds of art."
Thankfully for ArtStart, the community has embraced the center.
"It's great. Really, at this stage in ArtStart's life, we're still very much running on the good grace of the community. We haven't gotten the big grants yet, though we're setting ourselves up for that, but the support has just been phenomenal," Ehmann said.
"We exist because of the community and the folks that come in and believe in what we're doing and donate or volunteer or just make connections for us. It means everything to us."
