Second annual ArtStart Zombie Prom set for Oct. 18
The zombie trend is fueled by the many current TV shows and films featuring a zombie storyline, but the prom theme originates from the off-Broadway musical Zombie Prom. The musical is based on a 1950's comic book of the same name that was made into a play and then brought to the off-Broadway stage in the '90's.
A short film version was made in 2006 and tells the story of star-crossed high school sweethearts, one of whom becomes a zombie. The high school principal forbids the zombie hero to attend high school, citing Rule #7, Subsection 9 of the student handbook that specifically does not allow zombies to re-enroll. His fellow students support him, despite his deteriorating appearance, and finally he and his girlfriend are allowed to attend their senior prom where they happily dance the night away.
Zombie prom events have since sprung up in many major cities including Chicago and Philadelphia. Saline (Mich.) High School Music Boosters used the theme as a fundraiser for the school's choir to finance a trip to "Carnegie Hall. In their promotional literature, the group noted "those not in costume will be considered food." Not so with the Rhinelander ArtStart event. "Don't worry if you don't have a costume because prom-goers can get a zombie makeover at the party, or just come as your scary self," Linder said. She added, "It's all in good fun and a great way to support the arts in our community." A complimentary snack buffet and cash bar will be available, and dance music will be provided by a deejay.
Admission is by donation to ArtStart at the door, and all proceeds will benefit ArtStart exhibitions, cultural events, and children's art programs. Those attending may also view the photographic exhibitions In a New Lignt: A Photographic Journey of Transformation and Room and Board: The Bedroom and Weeknight Dinners, by Lois Bielefeld, currently on display in the ArtStart galleries.
