Higgason prepares for Art Detour after award-winning summer season
"I always look forward to Art Detour because I get to visit with new and returning customers in a relaxed environment," Higgason explained. "I do art fairs in the summer and they are crowded and intense. It's hard make sincere connections with so much going on around you. At Art Detour I am able to take more time with people and show off my workspace. I can explain and even demonstrate how my pieces are made. I think the work has more impact when someone can see the tools I use for carving and learn about the entire process."
Higgason had a rewarding summer show season. She helped organize a new art event in Minocqua with her group of artist friends.
The Art Gypsies' Garden Party was held in June at Blue Lake Pines Resort. The group plans to hold the event again next year.
"It was really successful and really fun," she said. Next Higgason headed to Marquette, Mich. in July for Art On the Rocks where she won best in ceramics, beating out 19 other potters. Then in early September she received one of nine "honorable mention" awards at the Wausau Festival of Arts. "I was very honored to win an award in such a big show, especially since the judging isn't broken into categories. I was judged against all 120 artists," Higgason said.
Art Detour signals the end of Higgason's outdoor show circuit for 2014. She confirms that regardless of the weather she and her guest artists are prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws at them. "We have both indoor and outdoor contingency plans. It could be a beautiful, sunny warm weekend, or it could be snowing. We've seen both in the past. We'll be prepared either way. I hope people come out and support all the artists who are showing throughout the Northwoods this weekend," she remarked.
