In February of 1968, a crowd numbering close to 2,000 braved below freezing temperatures and gathered at the Memorial Building to hear from then former vice president Richard Nixon, when he stopped in Rhinelander while on the campaign trail. After a 30-minute speech, Nixon answered questions from the audience and later, flanked by several local policemen, signed autographs as he exited the building. He was elected president and remained in office until his resignation in 1974.
