As homecoming week approaches for the School District of Rhinelander, the hope is the Hodags won't have to go somewhere over the rainbow to find the brains, heart and courage they'll need to defeat Ashland Friday night.

In the week leading up to the big game, the Rhinelander High School Student Council will be busy encouraging the student body to cheer the team on and ensure a victory over the Oredockers.

The formula for homecoming stays pretty much the same, but the ingredients put into the formula are at the discretion of the student council.

The first task for the council over is choosing a theme. Seniors Logan Sackett (student council president) and Janice Luu (student council historian/public relations coordinator) said the group used its summer retreat at the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom (CAVOC) to discuss homecoming themes.

The group ultimately settled on "The Wizard of Oz" as this year's theme.

"We had a big poster board up at CAVOC when (the student council) met in July and we had a whole bunch of themes that we were deciding on and, somehow, 'The Wizard of Oz' came up," Luu said.

"I think it was the new movie ("Oz the Great and Powerful") that kind of sparked us with that. Fire and ice, Wizard of Oz and the circus were our last three choices that we decided on and we ultimately went with Wizard of Oz."

The theme is mainly used in preparation for the dance to be held on Saturday evening. Luu said the decorations are being kept a secret this year, but teased that students definitely won't be in Hodag Country anymore.

"The myth is when you first walk into the building, the (front entrance security area) is going to be the tornado and then you'll take the yellow brick road to get into the gym," she said.

"Once you get in the gym, you'll go through some trees and then it's (the land of Oz) in the gym."

After a theme was chosen, the council got to work planning spirit week. Each year, dress-up days are assigned throughout the week leading up to the game. This year, in continuing the tradition initiated last year, the dress-up days will be used by the four classes at Rhinelander High School to earn points toward winning the illustrious Spirit Trophy.

"We're having our dress-up days - animal day, America day, Northwoods day, century day and then Friday, of course, is spirit day," Sackett said.

"A long time ago, these were just used to get spirit up for the homecoming game, but last year we started the Spirit Trophy. Classes compete against each other for points and then the trophy is presented at the game to the winning class."

While homecoming can sometimes be seen as a high school-only event, Luu said the goal is to get all grade levels involved this year and in the future.

"We're talking to other schools to try and get spirit week started at an earlier age. We, as seniors, get really into it because it's our last year, but we hope a lot of these days the kids are more happy about (it) so they participate," Luu said. "It's spirit week. We want everyone to get excited."

And it's not just about the student body either. A homecoming parade is once again being planned this year as a way to get the community involved and ready to cheer on the Hodags.

"We have the parade on Friday and everyone in the community is welcome to join the parade and come out and get excited with us," Sackett said.

"We also do window chalk decorations downtown to spread the excitement around," Luu added.

The parade will begin at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon. The game will follow at 7 p.m. at Mike Webster Stadium.

Other activities include the RHS talent show on Sunday at 6 p.m. in the RHS auditorium, the girls' powderpuff football game at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mike Webster Stadium and the boys' spike volleyball game at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium. All three events are open to the public.
