Hanson's Garden Village will host its second annual Fall Fest from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 18. The event will benefit the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry (RAFP).

Visitors can meander through the hay bale maze, located in greenhouse number four, provided they bring a can of non-perishable food for RAFP. This is the first time Hanson's has used the maze to benefit the food pantry.

The maze is already open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The bales of sweet-smelling hay take up half of the greenhouse and are stacked two to three bales high in spots.

There will also be a scavenger hunt in the maze for older children.

"I noticed there wasn't anything like that in the area, like people were traveling down to Merrill or Wausau to do the kind of orchard/pumpkin picking that kind of stuff," said Beth Hanson, manager of Hanson's Garden Village.

Families can enjoy the hayride pulled by a tractor, which will be a 15-minute to a half-hour ride that meanders through Hanson's property. There will even be a spot that children can stop to feed the chickens.

With Halloween coming up, people of any age can don costumes. Those who dress up will be entered to win a door prize.

There is an antique tractor set up and people can get their picture taken on it.

"A lot of little boys that come out here like to go and sit on the tractor, look at it or get close to it," Hanson said.

There will be cider, cookies and fall-themed snacks as well as crafts for the children. There may be pumpkin bowling as well.

"It's a nice little event to celebrate fall," she said.

Hanson estimates 100 to 200 people attended the event last year.

Fall decor such as pumpkins, straw bales, cornstalks, kale, squash, gourds and mums will be available for purchase.

4-H will have a little display as well as a few rabbits for 4-H Month.

There will be an educational exhibit for rabbits describing what they eat, how to care for them, and possibly how to build a proper hutch for the Northwoods environments.

Some baby rabbits may be available to good homes, if the babies are old enough by then.

A second booth will have hands-on 4-H projects. There will also be a dog for dog training demonstrations.

"October is 4-H Month and so we are promoting belonging to 4-H clubs, getting involved in 4-H project work," said 4-H youth development agent Lynn Feldman.

Someone will be available to give more information on 4-H.

"We look forward to being a part of [Hanson's Fall Fest]," Feldman said. "It's just a great collaboration, it's nice to have the opportunity to talk about 4-H."

Hanson said the event is a nice way to end the season as the store will soon close for the winter.

Hanson's Garden Village website, www.hansonsgardenvillage.com, and Facebook will be updated regularly.

The business is located at 2660 County G in Rhinelander.
