Careers in manufacturing will take center stage for about 600 Northwoods eighth graders when they attend the third Annual Heavy Metal Tour Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Nicolet College.

Along with activities on campus, students will also tour area manufacturing facilities and parents will have their own chance to attend open houses at plants so they, too, can learn about today's manufacturing careers.

"The idea is to give students and their parents a solid understanding of manufacturing and all of the different types of jobs that are available in the field," said Teri Phalin, PK-16 Admissions coordinator at Nicolet.

Over the course of the day students will tour several different manufacturing facilities that include ABX, Daigle Brothers, Hometown Trolley, Nimsgern Steel Corp., Northland Stainless, Northstar Steel, Ponsse, Oldenburg and Superior Diesel.

At Nicolet students will attend presentations by professionals from Daigle Brothers and Northland Stainless and tour the college's manufacturing and welding labs.

"It's going to be a very active day where they will see firsthand what working in a career in manufacturing is like," Phalin added.

Open houses for parents will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. at Ponsse Equipment, 4400 International Lane, Rhinelander; Northland Stainless, 1119A Bridge Street, Tomahawk; and Superior Diesel, 3250 S. Fox Ranch Road, Rhinelander.

All events were created in partnership with the area manufacturers listed above, the Grow North Regional Economic Development Corporation, and the North Central Wisconsin Workforce Development Board.

Businesses that are financial sponsors for the events include: ABX, Case, Daigle Brothers, Inc., Hometown Trolley, Nimsgern Steel Corp., Northland Stainless, Northstar Steel Fabricating, Inc., Oldenburg Group Inc., Printpack, and Superior Diesel.

Sixteen area schools will send students to the event. These include Arbor Vitae-Woodruff, Christ Lutheran Eagle River, Crandon, Elcho, James Williams Middle School, Lac Du Flambeau, Laona, Mercer, Minocqua-Hazelhurst-Lake Tomahawk, Nativity, Northland Pines Middle School, Northwoods Community Secondary School, Phelps, Three Lakes, Tomahawk, and Wabeno.
