Lake of the Torches donates $2,000 to help foster economic development in Vilas County
The check presentation was part of the VCEDC's Nov. 14 board meeting held in the casino's Hall of Nations Convention Center. The donation will be used to help the VCEDC's mission to provide assistance to new business owners and entrepreneurs who are starting operations in Vilas County.
"We really appreciate the support from Lake of the Torches as it will help us support and grow the 13 businesses currently in our four business incubators as well as find additional entrepreneurs to support. We look forward to continuing and growing the spirit of cooperation between the Vilas County Economic Development Corporation and the Lac du Flambeau Tribe," said Carl Ruedebusch, chairman of the Vilas County Economic Development Corporation.
Formed in 2010 as a public-private partnership, the VCEDC offers mentoring and investor assistance to aspiring business owners throughout the county. The VCEDC operates business incubators in Eagle River, Manitowish Waters and a new incubator in Phelps. These incubators offer space to the business at a nominal rate and VCEDC members offer business expertise to these new owners to successfully grow their business.
At the meeting, the board heard presentations from Lac du Flambeau officials about economic development efforts in Lac du Flambeau. Two members of the VCEDC board, Emerson Coy and Joni Theobald, are employed with the tribe. Board members also discussed ways to help strengthen the partnership between the VCDEC and the tribe.
"We at Lake of the Torches are very pleased to assist the Vilas County Economic Development Corporation in promoting business development in Vilas County and fostering a healthy economic environment in northern Wisconsin," said Lake of the Torches' Chief Executive Officer Bill Guelcher.
"Situated on the shores of Pokegama Lake and nestled in Wisconsin's Northwoods, the Lake of the Torches Resort Casino has a feel of a classic Northern retreat and reflects its Ojibwe culture and heritage," according to a press release announcing the donation. "The casino has over 800 slot machines (including a high-limit and non-smoking area), blackjack tables, poker tables, craps and roulette, a high-stakes Bingo Hall seating up to 500 persons, Woody's Bar and Grill and the Eagle's Nest Restaurant. The hotel has 101 well-appointed rooms, the Dancing Waters Lounge and the Woodland Oasis pool area. The 8,500 square-foot Convention Center with the Hall of Nations offers an outstanding venue for entertainment, receptions, trade shows, meetings, presentations and seminars. It is proudly owned and operated by the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians."
