Rhinelander ArtStart will showcase the works of two Midwestern artists in its final exhibition for the 2014 season opening Thursday, Nov. 20. Both featured artists, painter T.L. Solien and ceramicist Debbie Kupinsky, have exhibited internationally and are currently teaching in Wisconsin universities.

Solien, whose works have a home in London's Tate Gallery and the National Gallery in Australia, also has work in the Whitney Museum in New York, the Smithsonian Institute, the National Museum of American Art in Washington D.C. and the Art Institute of Chicago. He is currently Professor of Painting at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

"Solien is interested in engaging the viewer's imagination," exhibition curator Martin Rowe said. "That means spending some time viewing each painting. Many find them strangely beautiful and darkly humorous. We are very fortunate and honored to be exhibiting Solien's work, which I have seen in the Tate Gallery, and which I never dreamed I would be seeing again in Rhinelander, Wisconsin."

Kupinsky's ceramic work, "creates a sense of what lies within as well as without. As I create objects and images, I am exploring the interior lives and stories that lie hidden beneath the surface of everyday experience," she stated.

She adds that she finds inspiration for her work from the many walks she takes and from her memories about places. Kupinsky has exhibited nationally and internationally and is currently the Uihlein Fellow in Studio Art, Ceramics, at Lawrence University.

A reception for the artists will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at the gallery. Refreshments will be served.

The exhibition opens Thursday, Nov. 20, at ArtStart, 68 S. Stevens St. in Rhinelander, and will run through Jan. 17, 2015. Gallery hours are Thursday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday 1 to 7 p.m.; and Saturday 11 to 5. There is no admission charge for exhibitions, and donations are accepted.
