Rhinelander-Three Lakes-Tomahawk figure skating team takes the ice
The class A team made up of Grace Hoger from Three Lakes High School and Lauryn Cook from Rhinelander High School brought home gold medals in the jumps and spins events and a bronze in the moves event. This was enough to earn the tandem first place overall and a two-point lead over the Fox Valley co-op team.
There are four events over the season and the state champion earns an invitation to the national high school figure skating championships in Ohio next April.
Northern Edge is a three-school co-op of skaters from Rhinelander, Three Lakes and Tomahawk high schools. Currently there are 13 girls on the team. There are three levels of competition, A, B and C, with three elements - jumps, spins and moves - inside each level.
According to team manager Dean Hoger girls at all levels skated well. With 10 teams in the competition, earning a spot on the podium was difficult. Besides Hoger and Cook, other skaters participating include Carmen Incha, Albiona Sabani, Ashley Adams, Cami Buchman, Caitlin Harris, Shandi Peitsch, Lauren Rosendahl and Rachel Uhlarik from Rhinelander and Morgan Webster and Kiana Webie from Tomahawk.
The next competition will be in Stevens Point in December.
High school figure skating has been in Wisconsin for four years. 2014-15 marks the third year of the Northern Edge team and this the first year that the USFSA is holding a national competition.
The team is coached by Cassandra Hoger, past team member and UWSP student. For more information on the team, call Dean Hoger at (715) 482-2169 or email at [email protected].
