Minnesota man charged in Woodruff gas station robbery
By By Jamie Taylor and Jonathan Anderson-
Byron Lewis, 43, is alleged to have robbed the Krist gas station along U.S. Highway 51 in Woodruff at approximately 8:15 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9.
Lewis has been charged as a repeater.
Police say the person who robbed the store wore a dark-colored mask, brandished a handgun and demanded money from the store clerk. The clerk provided approximately $1,000, according to the criminal complaint.
Det. Bill Nichols of the Woodruff Police Department said the robbery lasted less than 10 seconds.
About two hours later, police received a tip of a suspicious person in a vehicle at the Trig's 70 West Center in Minocqua who matched the description of the suspect.
As police were en route to Trig's, they were advised that the van had headed toward the Minocqua Walmart. Oficers approached Lewis as he entered Walmart.
While they were frisking him for weapons, a bank bag from the Krist store was found on him.
Lewis was taken into custody and booked into the Oneida County jail on a probation hold.
Armed with a search warrant Monday, officers found more money in Lewis's van that appeared to have been taken from the gas station, along with a C02 pellet pistol that resembled a Beretta handgun and clothing that matched what the robber was said to be wearing.
Lewis made an initial appearance in Oneida County Circuit Court Wedneday afternoon at which time Judge Patrick O'Melia set bond at $50,000 cash.
Court records show Lewis has felony convictions for robbery and armed robbery.
He is due back in court Dec. 1 for an adjourned initial appearance.
