Middle school bowlers down Wittenberg

The Rhinelander/Elcho middle school level bowling team kicked off its season Sunday with a 7-2 victory over Wittenberg-Birnamwood at Dale's Weston Lanes.

After dropping two of the first three games, the Hodags ran the table in the Wisconsin Middle School Bowling League match. Scores were 136-137, 140-138, 121-127, 147-117, 151-103, 145-117, 157-143, 146-144 and 139-104.

"They did well," coach Mike Bourcier said. "Overall, you see good things. You get that first meet under everyone's belt. There were a little nerves and jitters at first but they came through and did pretty good."

Erik Jones led the way for the Hodags, filling 16 of 18 frames with seven strikes. Mackenzie Bourcier and Katrina Blasius each went 11 of 18. Bourcier had five strikes. Blasius had four. Calvin Schneider was 9 of 18 with five strikes and Jacob Wagler was 6 of 18 with three strikes.

The Hodags will bowl again Nov. 16 in Edgar.

RBA 7th, 8th grade girls begin season

The Rhinelander Basketball Association's seventh- and eight-grade girls' basketball traveling teams hosted a tournament Nov. 1 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.

The Hodag eighth graders went 2-1 on the day and finished second in the six-team field. Rhinelander defeated Ashland 24-13 and Tomahawk 41-10. The Hodags fell to meet-winner Merrill 30-25.

The Hodag seventh graders finished fifth in their pool with an 0-3 record. Rhinelander lost to Marathon 42-17, Medford 33-15 and Mercer 15-12.

RIA bantams open season with victories

The Rhinelander Ice Association's bantam level boys' hockey team opened the season with a pair of victories over Ironwood, Mich. Nov. 2 at the Rhinelander Ice Arena, the RIA reported on its Facebook page. Scores and further details were not immediately provided.
