School district teams with Nicolet on laptop project
The laptops given to the program no longer meet the school district's specifications. The information technology students at Nicolet College, under the direction of Scott Biscobing, clear the computers and then load educational software for children. The laptops are given to elementary students in grades K-5. This giveaway event provides 10 families with a laptop. Families complete an application and then each elementary school in the district has winners from.
Families meet at Nicolet College in the IT classroom. Nicolet students help the families use the laptops and become familiar with the software. The whole family is invited to attend and learn together. The number of giveaways each year depends on the replacement cycle plan for the school district.
"We have enjoyed the relationship with the School District of Rhinelander over the past five years," Biscobing said. "This partnership has allowed my students to investigate different operating systems and computers that they may not have otherwise had the opportunity to see and research. Through this project my students have been able to see how involvement in the community is important. For the first time this year, the Nicolet Technology club purchased memory to upgrade laptops to be able to install the newest software."
