The fight against cancer went to the dogs Aug. 23 when the American Cancer Society held its Bark For Life at the Rhinelander Oneida County Airport. Area pooches, with owners in tow, took to the track to dig up a cure for cancer. Bark For Life adds a twist to the cancer society's traditional Relay For Life event, serving as a fundraising activity to honor the care-giving qualities of canine companions while supporting the mission of the American Cancer Society. Last year's Bark for Life was the top Wisconsin Bark for Life event in 2013. This year the Rhinelander Bark for Life was named the Top Midwest Division Bark For Life event for 2014, raising over $6,500 for the fight against cancer.

Contributing to the success of the event were organizers Carol Lofquist, Kristin Antosh, April Peters and Carol Vaughan. The event was sponsored by Northern Paws Animal Hospital, Ministry Health Care, TLC Dog Training, Doctors Foster and Smith and Northern Exchange feed store. Pawz and Clawz Pet Food and Grooming, Dandy Dog, Amanda Parish Photography and the Oneida County 4-H Club also helped raise funds for the mission.

"Bark For Life is a Relay For Life event that honors the care giving qualities of canine companions and supports the life-saving mission of the American Cancer Society," said Diane Geis Hapka of the American Cancer Society. "There are approximately 78 million dog owners in the United States and 39 percent of American households have at least one dog in them. Dogs are members of the family and to many cancer survivors, they are caregivers. Bark For Life brings people out who may never have experienced a community's Relay event."

"We ask the participants try to raise money through pledges and sponsorships of their walk with their dogs, but it is not mandatory," said Carol Lofquist of TLC Dog Training. "We are just glad to have everyone come out and support the event. Many, like me, have lost pets to cancer. Dogs get the same cancer as people and canine cancer treatments and medications are the result of research studies for human health issues. We were glad to have the chance to remember our beloved pets and loved ones who have battled cancer at this event."

Funds raised through Bark For Life support the American Cancer Society's comprehensive cancer-fighting mission to help people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early, to help people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis, to find cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery, and to fight back against cancer by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight.

The 2015 event will be held on Aug. 15 in partnership with the Pawzitive Games, featuring dock diving, agility and speed events. Call (715) 277-4392 for further information, to be part of the planning committee, to sponsor the event or to register a pet.
