Pine Lake's haunted town hall scares up the fun for a good cause
The department uses the event to not only collect non-perishable food items and pet supplies, but as a way to bring the community together for a few family-friendly scares on Halloween.
"We just want to reach out to the community and bring everyone together for a good time," assistant chief Mike Braun said. "It also gives us a chance to donate to the food pantry. We always make this event free to the public so everyone can come and have fun, but we ask everyone to bring something in for the food pantry or the animal shelter. This is the first year we started asking for things for the animal shelter, too, so we look forward to being able to donate to them as well."
The event continues to grow each year as the people of Pine Lake and the surrounding municipalities come together to take a quick trip through the haunted town hall before enjoying games and plenty of candy and food.
That support and sense of community is exactly what the department was hoping for, Braun said.
"We just try to make it as fun as possible for the kids and just make sure everyone has a good time. Fortunately, it seems like everyone enjoys themselves. It's great to have everybody come and join us and donate to the pantry and the shelter and help us give back to the community," he said.
"It's always a great time. Really, we do it for the kids and they all seem to have smiles on their faces and seem to be enjoying themselves."
That sense of community is not lost on those that survive the haunted town hall and make it to the fun afterward.
"I think it's great that our little town of Pine Lake can come together and do this," Sherri Pollock said.
"It's so much fun every year. This is the kind of stuff that makes it great to live in such a close town. It's great to see our Pine Lake family come together to have fun with each other and support our community."
