Career Expo 2014 draws an estimated 650 students
An estimated 650 seventh grade students from throughout the Northwoods had the opportunity to explore answers to that question when they attended the recent Career Expo 2014 sponsored by Nicolet College.
The event featured 39 different exhibitors, the vast majority of which were businesses representing 16 different career fields.
"A big part of selecting a career is first knowing about the many different possibilities that are out there," said Erika Warning, Nicolet College Career Coach. "The Career Expo gave students the chance to learn about the many, many different careers and talk first hand with professionals in the different fields."
Seventh grade students are at the age when many start to get a general idea of what they may be interested in as a career, said Susan Holster, guidance counselor at James Williams Middle School.
"That's why events like this are so important," Holster said. "It gives them the opportunity to learn about careers many probably never knew existed. It also reinforces the career exploration activities we do in school."
Along with career options students also learned about the education and training necessary to enter any given field.
School districts that sent students to the event, held at the Rhinelander Ice Arena, included Rhinelander, Northland Pines, Three Lakes, Crandon, Mercer, Lac du Flambeau, Phelps, North Lakeland, Laona, Wabeno, Tomahawk, Elcho, and Nativity Catholic School.
Career fields students had the opportunity to learn about included business, finance, manufacturing, engineering, health, information technology, law enforcement, natural resources, media, government, education, tourism, construction, and many others.
Businesses and organizations that donated to the event include Rhinelander Ice Arena, Walmart, Forest County Potawatomi, Tomahawk Community Bank, Associated Bank, and the Raptor Education Group.
