The Quilters for Hospice group formed in January, 2005. Judy Kingsbury leads the group and Margaret Rasmussen secretary-treasurer helps with bookwork, record keeping and works with the Retired and senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). The Hospice Quilters have approximately 18 women who work hard to provide quilts for each and every Ministry Hospice patient. The group meets the third Monday of each month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ministry Home Care building in Rhinelander, where they set up their sewing machines at different stations to get as many quilts completed as possible in the time allotted. Many individuals continue to work on these quilts outside of their set quilting time in office.
The main objective of this group is to supply hospice patients with a quilt made with love to provide them with warmth and to let them know they are cared for.
Hospice is end-of-life care for people of all ages, of any diagnosis, provided in the place they call home. While the majority of hospice care occurs in private homes, Ministry's team also supplements the care provided by the residential staff at nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other community-based residences. Their expertise in pain and symptom control, as well as their ability to provide extended support to the family members, brings great value to these collaborations. Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance companies provide some funding for this comprehensive care, but many who need it are under-insured or uninsured. As part of their mission, Ministry provides this important end-of-life care to anyone who is medically eligible, regardless of their ability to pay.
