This weekend the Northwoods will pause to remember those who sleep in honored rest so that we may all continue to enjoy freedom. The following is a listing of Memorial Day observances in Northwoods communities.

Harshaw

Harshaw will host its annual Memorial Day Ceremony Saturday, May 24 at 11:30 a.m. There will be a motorcycle procession from American Legion Post 93 in Tomahawk to Union Grove Cemetery in Harshaw.

Riders will gather at the American Legion at 9 a.m. and ride out to the cemetery at 10:25 a.m.

There will be a free luncheon at Cassian Town Hall after the ceremony.

For more information on the procession, call Red Ingman at (715) 966-1166. For more information on the ceremony, call Rick Smith at (715) 420-0552 or visit www.veteransceremony.org.

Rhinelander

The Oneida County Veterans Council, consisting of members from the American Legion, American Veterans, Disabled American Veterans, Marine Corps League, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, invites all citizens to join them Monday as they pause to remember and honor fallen military heroes who fought to create, preserve and defend the freedom of the United States of America. Here is the schedule for cemetery ceremonies:

8 a.m. VFW Color Guard at Newbold Cemetery

8:30 a.m. AmVets/American Legion Color Guard at Northland Memorial Park

9 a.m. VFW Color Guard at Forest Home Cemetery

9 a.m. AmVets/American Legion Color Guard at Nativity of Our Lord Cemetery

At 10:30 a.m., a river ceremony will be held at the Davenport Street Bridge. Guests can view the ceremony from Trig's parking lot. Upon completion, participants and guests will march/walk to the Oneida County Courthouse where the final Memorial Day ceremony will begin at approximately 11 a.m. The guest speaker again this year will be Glenn Johnson, World War II veteran and ex-POW who will finish the speech he started last year. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair. Any veteran in the city of Rhinelander who is unable to get to the ceremony on their own but wishes to attend may contact Rapid Cab at (715) 365-7433 for transportation to and from the ceremony free of charge. For more information about the ceremony, contact the Oneida County Veterans Service Office at (715) 369-6127.

Three Lakes

At 10 a.m. Monday people will parade from the Three Lakes Winery to the Three Lakes Cemetery where a guest speaker and student speakers will address the group.

The Three Lakes High School band will play patriotic music including "America the Beautiful."

"(The ceremony) is usually well attended by everybody in the community so it's something that's very good and we try to make sure that they understand that this is the reason for Memorial Day not just so there is a long weekend," said Richard Gonitzke, band director at Three Lakes High School.

The event is hosted by American Legion.

Tomahawk

Tomahawk will honor Memorial Day with a ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at Veterans Memorial Park.

Services will also be conducted at Greenwood Cemetery at 11:15 a.m.

At 11:40 a.m. a service will be conducted at Calvary Cemetery and another will be held at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Irma from noon to 12:15 p.m.

Mary Czaja will be the guest speaker. Czaja is the 35th district assemblywoman.

The Tomahawk Veterans Honor Guard, the Tomahawk High School band, and Mayor Clarann Stocker will attend the event.
