On Saturday, Pioneer Park will be filled with the activity of dozens of local farmers as they kick off their season with their annual "Critter Fest" and swap meet.
Normally, visitors to the Hodag Farmers' Market can expect to find great farm-fresh vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and meats but that won't exactly be the case this weekend.
Visitors will also find a wide variety of live farm animals available to purchase - as well as a good mix of the usual Farmers' Market fare.
Critter Fest offers an opportunity for would-be home gardeners and farmers to explore their options for starting hobby farms, as well as offering seasoned homesteaders an opportunity to add to their flock.
For merely curious parties and families, it simply promises to be a fun Saturday morning activity.
Last year, the Hodag Farmers' Market was a very popular choice for weekend outings and it promises to be the same this year. With vendors selling everything from asparagus to zucchini, buyers can get a great fresh product that was produced right in the Northwoods. New for 2014, vendors will also be accepting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and WIC payments for anything at the market. This means healthy, fresh foods are even more accessible to all members of our community.
The Hodag Farmers' Market will run each Saturday through summer, rain or shine, at Pioneer park from 8 a.m. to noon. I invite everyone from the area to come support our local growers and also bring home some great quality food. After all, it wouldn't be summer in the Northwoods without a few fresh kebabs on the grill.
