One hundred seventy scholarships were awarded to 87 Rhinelander High School seniors Sunday during the Rhinelander Area Scholarship Foundation's 27th annual awards ceremony.

The foundation itself handed out $16,500 in scholarships, up $1,500 from last year. A total of $288,350 in scholarship money was distributed.

At the start of the event, foundation board president Kathy Richards-Bess gave a brief history of the foundation and talked about how it raises funds. For example, this year the group will hold a raffle for a neon Hodag.

"The foundation began in 1991 and it has been a vibrant part of the community ever since," she said. "Each year we have fundraising events that help us to fund the scholarships that we're going to be able to award to these students. ... We're kicking off a fundraiser that will begin the last week of school for a neon Hodag. We'll be selling raffle tickets over the summer for a drawing at Homecoming."

As she finished her speech, Richards-Bess said the day was all about the students.

"This year, we're able to give out $16,500 plus the additional scholarships and we hope that with each year, the number grows and grows so we can support our students," she said.

RHS Principal David Ditzler said the event is very special.

"This is one of the highlights of my year as Rhinelander High School principal," Ditzler said. "I get to see the entire community coming together for an event like this to recognize our schools produce students that are well prepared for what lies ahead. This ceremony reminds us that with hard work and high achievement come positive consequences in our lives."

Over 80 students received scholarships during the ceremony, but it was Destiny Baitinger who came away with the biggest prize - the Richard Redfield Memorial Scholarship worth $68,000 over fours years.

Baitinger, who will use that money to attend UW-La Crosse and earn a degree in business before moving on to law school, said she was speechless after hearing her name called.

"It's really overwhelming. I don't really have words other than thank you," she said. "I can't even imagine that I would receive this. I'm really blessed. I'm speechless."

Note: A full list of scholarship recepients will be published at later date.
