The Rhinelander High School mock trial team left Wednesday for the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Madison. Final preparations are under way for the event. On April 27, the team scrimmaged the state champions from Indiana and Illinois at the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison. On May 4, they scrimmaged the state champions from Minnesota at the Rusk County Courthouse in Ladysmith.

"We were very encouraged by our strong performance against three excellent teams," said head coach Kathy Vick-Martini.

"All three states are known for fielding some of the best competition in the national tournament," added attorney coach Jim Jacobi. Minnesota won the national championship in 2010 and Indiana won in 2011.

"It was definitely a good experience for our students, as only two of them have any national tournament experience," added legal adviser Mike Bloom, Oneida County Circuit Court Judge. Co-captains Amber Sheth and Lydia O'Brien were members of last year's state championship team. The remaining members of this year's team will be experiencing national competition for the first time. They include juniors, Mike Anderson and Erin Tenderholt; sophomores, Anna Catlin and Emily Ditzler; and freshmen, Ellie Rickman, Albiona Sabani, and Sydney Schallock.

The mock trial team has raised over $11,000 to help defray travel expenses for participation in the national tournament.
