YMCA of the Northwoods celebrates 10th anniversary in style
Since 2004 the Y has become a go-to destination for families and individuals looking to have fun and get healthy. That legacy was celebrated with an open house showcasing all of the activities the Y has to offer.
"It was outstanding. We had members come in all day sharing stories, we had our Derby party, we had some of our programs running for people to try out. It was very festive," said Chris Cook, marketing and wellness director. "It was cool to see a lot of members hanging out with other members in our birthday party lobby signing our card and checking out some of the history of the Y and sharing stories. It was a real success."
Cook said the goal of the celebration was to give back to the people who have made the Y the place to be for fun and excitement.
"It was very special, very unique, very satisfying to see everybody come to celebrate with us," he said. "We're celebrating 10 years, so we were excited for it, but it wasn't going to be exciting unless our members and the community came in to celebrate with us. That's really what we're all about here and to see them come in and check out the facility - we had a bunch of tours and people come in for the first time and check it out. We picked up some new memberships but seeing all of the members and the community come in to share and celebrate and have a good time is really what makes it satisfying and special for us."
It was special for the people who came to share in the celebration, too.
"I became a member right away because I wanted a place to go and work out and swim laps and things like that, but then once I had kids, I got to see a whole new side of the Y and share that with them," Mike Robertson explained. "They've loved every minute of it. They love swimming, they love all of the activities and programs, I love the gym. There's something for everyone. Getting to come here - and I can't believe it's been 10 years - but getting to come here and celebrate after being there when it opened, that's really cool, especially being able to come here now with my kids."
The Y has become a great place for families and those who attended the birthday party could not say enough about what the Y means to them.
"There's just so much for the kids to do. There's always something going on and (my kids) always have a blast with whatever they're doing," said Kris Larsen.
"I love living in the Northwoods, but sometimes there's just not a lot to do for the kids and to have the Y here, that means there's always a place to go to have fun."
