On Thursday, people across the country observed the National Day of Prayer.

In Rhinelander, a group of 16 people came together on the lawn of the Oneida County Courthouse - and endured less than ideal weather conditions - to sing and pray for the nation.

Annual national days of prayer have occurred since 1952 when President Harry S. Truman signed a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress. In 1988, the first Thursday of May was permanently set as the National Day of Prayer.

Nationwide calls to pray have occurred throughout history though, beginning in 1775 when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation.
