The Accelerated Global Studies class at Rhinelander High School recently completed a unit on Latin America and immigration. During this unit, the class focused on the question of whether or not people have the right to freely move. Students specifically explored the historical roots of current immigration by examining the impacts of colonialism and independence on the region.

Students also completed a simulation that went through the legislative process of passing an immigration bill, including a mock presidential campaign. During the course of the presidential race for the White House, each side was vying for control of not only the top political spot in the United States, but also the top position in influencing the direction of American immigration policy. As members of political parties, students were able to contribute "money" to either the Democratic Party Super PAC or the Republican Party Super PAC. The students raided their cupboards, found canned goods/non-perishable food items and then brought the canned goods to class. The canned goods were used as currency to purchase advertisements expressing their support of their candidate or their opposition to the other party candidate.

In the end over 440 food items were collected, with all the food items being donated to the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry. In the end, the food items helped to generate discussion about the American political system, facilitate work on conflict resolution skills, and went to help out a good cause.
